In 2017, all World Health Organization (WHO) Member States unanimously adopted the Global Action Plan on the public health response to dementia. ADI’s series of From Plan to Impact reports indicate that Member States are struggling to deliver on their commitments to deliver National Dementia Plans.
To address this issue, ADI launched the #WhatsYourPlan campaign in November 2021 urging governments to commit to implementing National Dementia Plans. This report highlights the progress made during the second year of the campaign, including:
- A 13 member association campaign in the Caribbean region
- A multilateral agreement calling for an extension to the Global Action Plan on the public health response to dementia 2017-2025
- ADI participation in a G7 dedicated side event on dementia in Nagasaki, Japan, which called for greater compliance with the Global Action Plan on dementia
- Commitments from the Ministry of Health in Malaysia, Brazil, Jordan and Georgia to develop a National Dementia Plan, with Armenia launching their plan in mid-2023.
As the #WhatsYourPlan comes to a close, ADI’s determination and support for the development of National Dementia Plans does not. In the subsequent years ADI will continue to support National Dementia Plan advocacy with its member associations, with a particular push in 2024, leveraging the election cycle in which 2.2 billion are eligible to vote and calling on governments to make dementia a priority. ADI also remains steadfast in its efforts to achieve an extension to the WHO Global Action Plan on the public health response to dementia to ensure their remains a multilateral instrument which aims to improve the lives of living with dementia and their carers all across the globe.
