On 9 December, France Alzheimer held its 19th annual meeting in Paris. Hosted under the patronage of President Emmanuel Macron, the event brought together representatives from across the country’s 101 departments and Francophone world to discuss the latest developments in dementia treatment, diagnostics, care and support in France.
Joël Jaouen, President of France Alzheimer et maladies apparentées opened the event, which was moderated by esteemed health journalist, Hélène Delmotte.
The second symposium placed France’s national response to dementia within an international context through a panel discussion featuring ADI CEO Paola Barbarino, Lorène Gilly, Head of Public Policy for France Alzheimer, and Capucine Ulian, Advisor to the Directorate-General for Social Cohesion (DGC).
Capucine Ulian, opened the proceedings, highlighting France’s efforts in addressing the growing impact of dementia through France’s recently launched neurodegenerative diseases strategy
Lorène followed Dr. Ulian, to discuss about why participating in the international movement is so important for Alzheimer France, highlighting how global collaboration ultimately benefits people living with dementia and their carers here in France. She also explained why ADI’s Lyon conference will play such a pivotal role in their efforts to secure a dedicated National Dementia Plan.
Paola outlined the global landscape of National Dementia Plan implementation, drawing on key findings from ADI’s From Plan to Impact VIII report, underscoring the stark reality that only 43 of the 194 WHO Member States currently have a National Dementia Plan. Despite France’s commitments in 2017 and again in 2025 to develop such a plan, the country still does not have one in place.
Paola also underscored the emerging disparities created by the uneven regulatory and payer approvals of new treatment across Europe, as well as ADI’s upcoming conference in Lyon, France from the 14-16 April 2026, organised in collaboration with France Alzheimer.
ADI would like to thank France Alzheimer for inviting us to take part in these important discussions, and we look forward to continuing this constructive exchange at our 2026 Global Conference.
