Diagnosis and health system preparedness

A World Alzheimer Report 2021 webinar

This is the final in a series of three webinars focused around the launch of the World Alzheimer Report 2021, ‘Journey through the diagnosis of dementia’.

It is hard to think of a more poignant time in terms of health system readiness for dementia. Most health systems around the world are not ready for the convergence of three major factors coming together at the same time, which are:

  1. Globally ageing populations, with age being the biggest risk factor for dementia
  2. Diagnostic breakthroughs. We are on the verge of revolutionary breakthroughs, including blood biomarkers, that will offer quicker, cheaper and less invasive diagnostic tests
  3. Treatment breakthroughs. Just this year we have seen the first FDA approved treatment for Alzheimer’s disease and we are witnessing a surge in activity in the research field

When these factors combine, it is going to put incredible pressure on health care systems and despite calling for preparedness for years and despite the introduction of the WHO Global action plan on dementia, few healthcare systems, if any, have put in place robust strategies to ensure robust, safe and rights-based diagnosis pathways, treatment and support.

During ‘Diagnosis and health system preparedness’, we will hear specifically about the forecast wait times for access to diagnostic tests and to disease modifying treatments, which in the context of a degenerative condition is unacceptable.

Join us for this 75-minute webinar, hear from our expert panel and pose your questions about this urgent issue – which is no longer an advocacy call for preparedness but a demand to catch up, for readiness.
